There are certain things you need to do before you come to university to make sure everything runs smoothly. Some are essential, some advisable and some just for international students.

All students

Essential tasks

If you have received and accepted an offer from Exeter you will receive several emails to help you prepare for University life. These contain important information. Please check your email account regularly and make sure they do not go into your junk folder. Here are some of the emails you will receive and when to look for them:

• Preparing for university emails (June, July, August and September)
• 'Welcome to the University of Exeter. Important Next Steps' (from mid August). This will contain your student number, information on how to activate your IT account and registration information.
• University Accommodation emails (if applicable)
• A welcome email from your College (from mid August)

Your UniCard is your University ID card and gives you access to the library, NUS discount, printing, electronic resources, buildings on campus and lots more. It is essential that you have it before your course begins.

You can apply for your UniCard once your place at Exeter is confirmed, and it is important to apply before you arrive. You will be able to collect your UniCard from the following locations:
Streatham Campus: Forum
St Luke's: Info at St Lukes
Penryn campus: Sports Hall during welcome weekend (13-15 September) or Info Point, Peter Lanyon Building following welcome weekend.

Exeter campuses: all new students

• Visit the Unicard Application portal

Continuing students (all campuses)

If you would like to update the photograph on your UniCard, please send a photograph to sid@exeter.ac.uk if you are based in Exeter or to cc-registry@exeter.ac.uk if you are based in Cornwall, with the title 'Updated UniCard Photo for New Course.

Your Welcome to the University of Exeter email will tell you how to activate your IT account. You need to do this before you can complete online registration. You will be allocated a student username, password and university email address, and will be able to access iExeter, our student portal.

You will need to register at the start of every academic year that you study here. University registration is the process by which you agree to the University’s current regulations. Visit the Student Registration web page for further information.

To register:

• Make sure you have activated your IT account (see above)
• Log in to the Student Record System using your short username and password
• If you have been cleared to register you will see a red box titled 'Welcome to online registration'. Click on 'Register Now', then follow the instructions on screen.

International students

If you are from a country outside of the EU and studying with a student visa, you may not be able to complete online registration until you have arrived at the University and completed International Student Clearance (more information below).

Your welcome email will detail any tuition fees you need to pay and the associated deadlines. If you have applied to live in University accommodation you will also need to pay a deposit to secure the booking. This will be detailed in an email from the Accommodation Office.

Throughout the year you can check your recent transactions and balance in your online statement. Please visit our Student Finance pages for details on how to pay and when to pay.

iExeter is a free app that provides all students with personalised information and services to help you make the most of your life and studies at the University of Exeter. You can download the app for free from iTunes App Store or Google Play. There is also a web version of the app which works on any internet-enabled device.

Exeter students: Create an account with Glide for internet access when you’re in your residence – you can use any username and password for this, it doesn’t have to be your university credentials. Internet access is provided as part of your accommodation agreement. (If you will be living in Garden Hill House you should follow this link, and if you'll be living in a nominated residence you should check the information from your accommodation provider, as different arrangements may be in place).

**Please note, Penryn students moving into Glasney Village and Tuke House in Cornwall do not have to pay for it in advance as it is included in the accommodation fee**

There are student Health Centres on our Streatham and Penryn campuses.

Exeter-based students

If you are based on the Streatham campus you should register with the Student Health Centre online before you get here. Additional information on the services can be found on the Health Centre homepage.

If you will be studying at St Luke's or living at Rowancroft, we recommend you register with The Heavitree Practice.

The Student Health Centre recommends Expert Self Care, a free app providing health advice for students, available for Android and Apple devices. For more information visit the website or search for 'Expert Self-Care - Student' in app stores.

Penryn-based students

The Penryn Surgery is available in the Tremough House Annexe, Penryn Campus, five days a week during term time. You can register with Penryn Surgery during ‘Move-in’ weekend in The Compass (Exchange Building), or email compass@fxplus.ac.uk to request a registration form.

If you will be living in Falmouth, The Compass team will have details about other local doctor surgeries in Falmouth.

Vaccinations

Wherever possible, it is recommended that all students under the age of 25 receive the Meningitis ACWY vaccine before coming to university and you should also ensure you have had two doses of the Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination before you join us. If you have not received these, or are unsure, we suggest discussing this with your doctor. International students should discuss with their doctor in their home country what vaccinations are recommended for living in the UK.

Before you start university, it is important to consider the advice, information and support available to you if you experience any of the following:

• Specific learning difficulty
• Mental Health difficulty for at least a year
• Physical disability
• A long-term medical condition

In some instances it is essential that we make arrangements for elements of your support before you arrive, i.e. if you require specific support and equipment to be in place when you start; or you need adjustments to your accommodation and/or exams.

What you pack for your new life at University will depend on the type of accommodation you are in. Our Accommodation Team have put together a handy check list. If you are an international student please ensure you bring any original documentation detailed in your CAS. You might also want to read our International Student Guide p35.

We actively discourage students from bringing cars to our campuses, or the surrounding residential areas. Finding parking spaces around our Exeter campuses is a particular challenge and large sections of the city operate a residents’ parking zone scheme. We strongly advise you not to bring a car.
